The second and third graders at Lakeside Elementary have been hard at work making coil bird nests. We watched an awesome video about different bird nests and then constructed our own out of clay. The students had to work quickly to make a cookie (slab) of clay for the bottom of their nest and then roll lots of coils to build the sides. We used the 4S's method to connect our coils - Score, Slip, Squish, & Smooth. They did a great job! Then we rolled some eggs and connected them to the bottom of our nest. After they had gone through the kiln, we looked at some different types of bird eggs and the students painted their birds nests and eggs. If only those eggs would hatch... we'd have some really interesting birds!
